Why Do My Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed?

When we talk about wisdom teeth, what we are talking about are your third molars, which are most often the last teeth to erupt, typically while patients are between the ages of 17 and 25. Because it is no longer common for patients to lose their adult teeth before their wisdom teeth erupt, there is often not enough room for these teeth to grow in as they should. These wisdom teeth may be unable to break through the gum tissues and jawbone, becoming impacted, or they may grow in at the wrong angle, causing further dental issues, such as:

  • Tooth decay
  • Dental cysts
  • Pain or discomfort in your jawbone
  • Damage to neighboring teeth
  • Gum infections
  • Inflammation of surrounding gum tissue

To avoid these severe dental issues, our dentists may recommend extractions for your wisdom teeth before they can become impacted. Our team will perform a thorough examination of your mouth and smile, the positioning of your teeth, and bone structure, to determine whether removing your wisdom teeth is necessary. To guarantee your comfort throughout the procedure, we provide sedation dentistry options designed to ensure a smooth and stress-free extraction experience for you. Contact our office today to schedule your appointment. We look forward to helping you keep your smile at the top of its game!

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Please keep in mind that you may experience the following after your tooth extraction. This is normal, and our team will provide advice on how to manage them:

  • Bleeding: Some minimal bleeding after your procedure is expected for 24 to 48 hours. If the bleeding does not stop by itself, or if it becomes heavy, please call our office.
  • Swelling: You may notice swelling for two to three days after your surgery. After three days, the swelling will diminish. We recommend using an ice pack to address swelling for the first 24 hours and warm, moist heat after the first 24 hours.
  • Pain: You may experience some lingering soreness or pain after your procedure. Please use mild pain relievers or prescribed pain medications as instructed.
  • Limited Diet: We recommend our patients consume a diet of soft and cold foods and liquids while you are numb. You can return to a normal diet as soon as the numbness has dissipated and you are comfortable.

Remember: If you received sedation during your procedure or have been prescribed pain medication, you cannot drive for 24 hours after your procedure.

How Do I Recover Quickly?

We want to make sure our patients’ extractions are as comfortable and painless as possible, and your at-home healing period is a part of that. Please follow all the directions our team gives you and your loved ones to ensure the best post-operation experience. With that in mind, please:

  • Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid using straws to drink, as these may cause dry sockets.
  • Maintain a diet of soft foods. Do not eat anything that could get stuck in your teeth. This includes nuts, rice, popcorn or sticky candies.li>
  • Do not smoke or use any tobacco products for at least five days after your surgery.
  • Do not touch the surgical site with your fingers or your tongue.
  • Do not rinse your mouth out or spit for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Avoid strenuous activities. Do not exercise for three to four days after your surgery.
  • If you are experiencing swelling and discomfort, you may use ice packs in 20 minute intervals.
  • If your jaw becomes stiff, apply warm, moist heat to that area of your face.
  • Use mild pain relievers such as TYLENOL® or ibuprofen as directed.
  • Use any prescribed medications as directed.
  • After the first day, use a warm saltwater rinse after eating to flush our food debris.

Please do not accept advice from friends or family. Please speak with our team if you are experiencing pain or discomfort, or if you have any questions regarding your recovery. Please contact our office if you would like to schedule a follow-up meeting after your wisdom tooth removal.

FAQ

What are wisdom teeth and why do they need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. They often need to be removed if they become impacted, meaning they do not have enough room to grow in properly. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection or damage to nearby teeth, which is why removal is recommended in many cases.

At what age should wisdom teeth be removed?

There is no one-size-fits-all age for wisdom teeth removal, but it is common to have them removed between the ages of 17 and 25. Dentists often recommend removal before wisdom teeth fully develop or cause complications. Early removal can help avoid future issues such as infections, overcrowding or tooth damage.

What happens during the wisdom teeth removal procedure?

During wisdom teeth removal, your dentist or oral surgeon will administer local anesthesia or sedation to ensure you are comfortable. They will then make an incision in the gum tissue to remove the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces. The entire process usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

How long does it take to recover after wisdom teeth removal?

Recovery after wisdom teeth removal typically takes about one to two weeks. The first few days are crucial for healing, and you will likely experience some swelling and discomfort. Following your post- surgery care instructions, such as taking prescribed medications and avoiding certain foods, can help speed up your recovery.

What are the risks or complications associated with wisdom teeth removal?

While wisdom teeth removal is a routine procedure, there are some risks. Potential complications include infection, dry socket (a painful condition when the blood clot dislodges from the extraction site), and damage to nearby teeth or nerves. Following your post-op care instructions reduces these risks significantly.
